Approximately one in three German citizens had suffered from a mental disorder in the past 12 months. Social stigmatisation and illness-related impairment of almost all areas of life make mental illness a particularly difficult burden to bear for the sick and their families. For a long time it seemed almost hopeless to decipher the mystery of these diseases one day. However, this has changed in the last 10 years: new research methods in imaging, molecular genetics and experimental modelling allow insights into the complex mechanisms of development for the first time. Prof. Dr. Peter Falkai, Director of the Clinic for Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, is the spokesperson of the research group, in collaboration with Dr. Dr. Elisabeth Binder (Max Planck Institute for Psychiatry).
