Neurological intensive care patients who can't be weaned off ventilation or tracheal cannula as part of inpatient early rehabilitation treatment are increasingly frequently discharged into out-of-hospital intensive care, which generates annual costs of approximately €4 billion at the expense of the statutory health insurance system. The aim of the new form of care is to improve the long-term recovery potential of patients so that more patients can be weaned off ventilation or tracheal cannula after one year.
