Clinical Elective Program

This Program provides an opportunity for medical students from the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) to undertake a clinical elective at the Ludwig-Maximilians-University (LMU) Munich.

LMU was among the first universities in Germany to adopt an innovative undergraduate medical curriculum, which was named MeCuM – the Medical Curriculum Munich.
This curriculum is designed to equip students with professional skills, research qualifications and psychosocial expertise. MeCuM was developed on the basis of the knowledge and experience acquired during systematic faculty training courses, which were organized along the lines of the Harvard model of Problem-Oriented Learning (POL) in small groups.

MeCuM is a progressive method that introduces new teaching and learning techniques to students at all stages of training, and has since been adopted as a model for curriculum development at many other institutions of higher education.

Learning opportunities for CUHK elective students include:

  • Participation in ward rounds, outpatient clinics and routine ward work
  • Participation in tutorials, teaching rounds, workshops and simulation sessions

There are many opportunities for learning from patients within the unit, in addition to observing specific procedures. Students usually give a short presentation at the end of their attachment on a case they have seen or data they have collected.

Elective Assignment We do our best to assign CUHK students according to their clinical area of interest. Recommended fields are Radiology, Surgery and Orthopedics.
